Salary Sacrifice 2026-27: How Much You Can Add and What It Saves, $60,000 to $200,000

The most each salary can sacrifice under the $32,500 concessional cap, the tax saved, the drop in take-home pay and how much better off you end up.

1. Your pay and how much to sacrifice

You can sacrifice up to $20,500 a year without going over the $32,500 cap (your employer already pays $12,000 super guarantee).

How it works

  • โœ”You ask your employer to pay part of your pre-tax salary into super. You pay income tax on less, and the fund pays 15% on the contribution instead.
  • โœ”Your employer's 12% super guarantee plus your salary sacrifice count towards the $32,500 concessional cap for 2026-27.
  • โœ”Your employer must still work out the 12% super guarantee on your pay before the sacrifice.
  • โœ”Money in super is locked away until you reach preservation age and retire (with some exceptions such as the First Home Super Saver Scheme).
  • โœ”If your income plus concessional contributions is over $250,000, Division 293 adds another 15%.

Sacrificing up to the cap on each salary

Your employer's 12% super guarantee counts towards the $32,500 concessional cap, so the room left for salary sacrifice shrinks as your salary grows. Money you sacrifice is taxed at 15% in the fund instead of at your marginal rate, and the gap is your gain.

Questions people ask

What is the concessional contributions cap for 2026-27?+

$32,500 (up from $30,000). It includes your employer's super guarantee, salary sacrifice and personal contributions you claim a tax deduction for.

Is salary sacrifice worth it?+

Usually yes if your tax rate (plus Medicare) is above the 15% contributions tax: on a 30% tax rate you keep about 17 cents more in every dollar. On low incomes the gain is small, and the money is locked in super until retirement.

Does salary sacrifice reduce my employer's super?+

No. Since 2020 employers must work out the super guarantee on your pay before the sacrifice.

Does it reduce my HELP repayments?+

No. Salary-sacrificed super is added back to your repayment income, so HELP repayments stay the same.
