Bonus$5,000
Tax withheld from the bonus$1,612

Tax on your normal fortnightly pay$682
Take-home pay that fortnight (pay + bonus)$5,975

The bonus really adds about $1,600 to your tax and Medicare levy for 2026-27. The amount withheld is about right.

How it's worked out

  1. The bonus is spread over the pay fortnights it covers (26).
  2. That slice is added to one normal pay, and the tax table is used with and without it.
  3. The difference is multiplied back by the number of pay fortnights: that's the tax on the bonus (never more than 47%).

This is the ATO's Method A for bonuses, using the 2026-27 withholding formulas. A bonus for work in a single pay period is simply added to that pay instead. If you have a HELP debt, extra is withheld for it (not shown here).

Questions people ask

Why is so much tax taken from my bonus?+

It isn't taxed at a special rate. Your employer spreads the bonus over the year's pays and works out the extra tax at your normal rates, so it's taxed at your top rate plus the Medicare levy. On a $90,000 salary that's about 32%.

How much tax is withheld from a $2,000 bonus?+

On a $90,000 salary paid fortnightly, about $624, so you get $1,376.

Do I get bonus tax back?+

Only if too much was withheld. Your tax return works out the real tax on your whole year's income; extra withheld comes back as a refund.

Is the maximum withholding on a bonus 47%?+

Yes. Under the ATO's Method A and Method B(ii) the tax withheld from a bonus is capped at 47% of the bonus.
