A HELP (HECS) debt has no interest, but its balance is indexed every 1 June, and repayments come out of your pay only once your income is over the threshold. So how long it takes to clear depends far more on your income than on the debt.
Years to repay by income
| Income | $25k debt: first year | Years | Total repaid | $50k debt: first year | Years | Total repaid |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $75,000 | $821 | 12 yrs | $31,294 | $821 | 18 yrs | $70,301 |
| $90,000 | $3,071 | 7 yrs | $28,261 | $3,071 | 12 yrs | $61,496 |
| $110,000 | $6,071 | 4 yrs | $26,963 | $6,071 | 8 yrs | $57,024 |
| $140,000 | $10,776 | 3 yrs | $26,317 | $10,776 | 5 yrs | $54,412 |
What changes the time
- Repayments are a share of income above the threshold, so a pay rise speeds things up a lot.
- Part-time years or a career break pause repayments, but indexation keeps adding to the balance.
- Voluntary repayments go straight off the balance; making one before 1 June avoids that year's indexation on the amount paid.
